Gov. Ferguson directs state agencies and universities to look for more cuts

Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson is warning of deeper budget cuts just weeks after approving a two-year, $78 billion budget balanced with spending reductions and new revenue. His administration now says the state’s financial outlook continues to worsen—raising alarms for public school and university workers.

In a June 4 memo to state agencies and university presidents, Ferguson’s budget director told agency and university leaders to prepare only “critical and emergent” funding requests and to seek out “administrative savings or reductions in non-essential services.” The directive makes clear: existing programs must absorb the burden, and expansions are off the table.

The news follows projections of a ballooning $16 billion shortfall over the next four years, with tax revenues already coming in lower than expected. Despite $2 billion in reserves, officials say hiring, travel, and contracting freezes will likely stay in place this fall.

For unionized education workers, this means continued uncertainty—and likely pressure on already-stretched staffing and services. Budget decisions will take shape this fall, with Ferguson’s final proposal due in December and legislative action set for early 2026.

Union members are urged to stay informed and be prepared to advocate for jobs, wages, and student support services.
